A flamboyance of flamingoes in India(Location : Pulicat Lagoon).

Pulicat Lagoon, Flamboyance of Flamingoes, Greater Flamingoes.

Every year in India a festival is observed for the migrating birds like flamingo, kingfishers, herons, painted storks, spoonbills and duck. This festival aims to preserve the pulicat lake and its surrounding. Pulicat is second largest lagoon in India after chilika lake. This lagoon shares border with Andrapradesh and with Tamilnadu. In this lake the main attraction is the flamboyance(flock or stand) of greater flamingoes showing off their pink hues.
The annual ‘Flamingo Festival’ began at Sullurupeta near the Pulicat lake bird sanctuary in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The arrival of a large variety of migratory birds always held a special charm at Pulicat. The festival was being held every year to bring together the people and various Government departments in the task of preserving the Pulicat lake and surroundings.
Tourism, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture departments put up their stalls featuring their respective activities. The venue at Sullurupeta Boys High School was decorated for the festival.
This festival provides a unique opportunity for ornithologists, environmentalists, bird watchers, photographers, forest and tourism officials. The Flamingo Festival mainly promotes the eco-tourism in the district. In this three day festival, several cultural and entertainment programmes will take place.
The authorities made special arrangements for the facility of visitors on the SHAR road for seeing the migratory birds in the lake to attract more visitors by facilitating and to promote tourism which includes educating about the surrounding and its diversity in Pulicat lake.
