Mumbai is one of the megacities in the world. It is also called the city of dreams by fellow Mumbai residents because of virtually unlimited opportunities and wonders that it offers. Like the most expensive house in the world Antilla Hills of Ambani to the greatest slum in the world 'Dharavi'. Lets take a look at another wonder 'The Dabbawal'. The term which redefined performance standards in the world without employment of technology.
A dabbawala (one who carries the box), sometimes spelled dabbawalla or dabbawallah, is a person in the Indian city of Mumbai whose job is to carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to office workers. Tiffin is an old-fashioned English word for a light lunch, and sometimes for the box it is carried in. Dabbawalas are sometimes called tiffin-wallas. For the efficiency of their supply chain it has been claimed that this virtually achieves a Six Sigma performance rating, (i.e. 99.9999% of deliveries are made without error, he is at CMMi level 6).
The dabbawala originated when India was under British rule: many Indian people who worked in British companies disliked the British food served by the companies, so a service was set up to bring lunch to them in their workplace straight from their home. Nowadays, Indian businessmen are the main customers for the dabbawalas, and the service often includes cooking as well as delivery.
Though the work sounds simple, it is actually a highly specialized trade that is over a century old and which has become integral to Mumbai's culture.
What is NMTBSA?(Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association) It was started in 1880 as a charitable trust registered in 1956 the average literacy Rate in this industry 8th Grade Schooling. With no technological use this association of dabbawala achieves six sigma performance levels of 99.999999%.
Even though the dabbawal is a business with low average literacy rate and low or no technological employment, they follow strict rules such as no alcohol , must carry identity cards and must wear a white cap during business hours.
.
They achieved many awards, they hold a record in Guinness book, they were visited by Prince Charles of Wales who took keen interest in their work efficiency. It is truly amazing that in India such an organisation exist with virtually no error and a business based on heavy time management.
And Yeah It happens only in India
