We humans always dream to beat death but fails to realize that we can merely extend our life. The death in medical terms is defined as the stopping of the biological processes which sustains life. We can only cheat death but cannot escape it.
It would be nice if doctors have time to save the patient before the time runs out for the patient. When it comes to life of a dying person every second is crucial to save his life. Some medical procedure needs more time to perform than the time available for the patient to survive.
The suspended animation is a concept where the patient is neither dead or alive. In this Procedure the patients body is pumped with saline solution and cooled down to a temperature of 10 degree Celsius. At this temperature and without blood almost all cells in the body stops functioning. At normal temperature without blood the most damage is done to heart and brain because it starts to die just after 5 minutes of oxygen loss. But at lower temperature the chemical processes are much slower and and without blood other type of process starts, it is called anaerobic glycosis. In this chemical process cells produce enough energy to survive but stops to function in the absence of oxygen.
This medical procedure can give the doctors up to 2 hours to save the patients life suffering from heavy blood loss. This procedure seemed to be successful in pigs lets see whether it is successful in humans in coming years.
