How Rasgulla Became the Signature of Bengal?

rasgulla, Rossogulla, BengalWhen we think about Bengal the first thing that comes to mind is rasagulla and then think about the first noble prize winner in India Rabindranath Tagore in Literature. Bengal is also well known for communism of Marx Babu.

Just like chikken tikka, the rasgulla is also claimed by two places saying that the invented it. Of course the first one is Bengal and the other one is Odisha. The Odiyan claim that the Jagannath temple in Puri uses rasgullas as offering during Rath Yatra and many claims that was started in 12th century when temple came into existence. But the truth is the temple does not have rasgulla in the menu for chappan bhog, which is an offering to lord Krishna,

In Hinduism the splitting of milk is said to be unlucky that was the  in old ages, so offering god something made from splitted milk is high unlikely in the 12th century. But Bengali's might have picked up eating cheese from Portuguese until Nobin Chandra Das tweaked it by boiling cheese in sugar syrup and made it spongier thus inventing the Bengali signature. This was an important invention because this sweet delicacy can be enjoyed by anyone irrespective of any social status.

This particular incident propelled rasgulla towards popularity. One morning a famous and wealthy businessman Raibahadur Bhagwandas Bagla came with his family in search of water and halted his carriage at Nobin Chndra's shop because his son was thirsty. Nobin Chandra offered water along with Rasgulla to the boy. The boy was so delighted that he offered his father. The father was equally ecstatic and immediately bought a very large quantity of Rasgullas for his family and friends. And the rest is history, the power of 'Word of mouth' can still be seen today.
